Recovery After Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy

1.After Tonsillectomy and Appendectomy, the key to RECOVERY IS NUTRITION AND HYDRATION. FLUIDS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE HYDRATION AND INSURE RAPID HEALING WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS. MILD NON-ACIDIC JUICES (SUCH AS APPLE AND APRICOT), SOFT DRINKS AND POPSICLES ARE SUGGESTED. SOFT FOODS LIKE JELLO, ICE CREAM, CUSTARDS, PUDDINGS, AND MASHED FOODS ARE HELPFUL TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE NUTRITION. HOT, SPICY, ROUGH, AND SCRATCHY FOODS SUCH AS FRESH FRUITS, TOAST, CRACKERS, AND POTATO CHIPS SHOULD BE AVOIDED SINCE THEY MAY SCRATCH THE HEALING THROAT AND CAUSE BLEEDING. WE HAVE FURNISHED A DIET SHEET THAT SHOULD BE HELPFUL FOR THE FIRST WEEK. REMEMBER, POOR NUTRITION AND INADEQUATE HYDRATION INCREASES PAIN AND FEVER.

2. YOUR CHILD’S FIRST FIVE DAYS AT HOME after a Tonsillectomy and Appendectomy SHOULD BE SPENT SITTING UPRIGHT DURING THE DAY. ALLOW ONLY LIMITED ACTIVITY UNTIL YOUR FIRST POST-OPERATIVE VISIT. VISITORS SHOULD BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM SINCE THEY MAY UNKNOWINGLY BRING INFECTION AND OVER EXCITE YOUR CHILD. DIFFICULTY IN SWALLOWING, DROOLING, AND SPITTING UP OF SMALL AMOUNTS OF BLOODY MUCOUS IS TO BE EXPECTED FOR THE FIRST TWO DAYS. CONSTIPATION MAY OCCUR WITH PAIN MEDICATION USE AND AFTER ANESTHESIA.

3. A MODERATE AMOUNT OF THROAT DISCOMFORT AND EAR PAIN IS TO BE EXPECTED after a Tonsillectomy and Appendectomy, AND MAY PEAK BETWEEN DAY 4-7. PAIN MEDICATION WILL BE PROVIDED IF NEEDED AND MAY BE GIVEN ONE-HALF HOUR BEFORE EATING TO HELP YOUR CHILD SWALLOW MORE COMFORTABLY. HOWEVER, PAIN MEDICATION ON AN EMPTY STOMACH IS A COMMON CAUSE OF NAUSEA. GIVE ONLY MEDICATIONS PROVIDED BY DR. SEICSHNAYDRE. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. IBUPROFEN AND ASPIRIN MEDICATIONS SHOULD BE AVOIDED SINCE THEY MAY CAUSE BLEEDING. NO GARGLES OR MOUTH WASHES.

4. THE PATIENT SHOULD BE SEEN BY DR. SEICSHNAYDRE APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS AFTER SURGERY FOR A POST-OPERATIVE VISIT. IF EATING WELL, YOUR CHILD MAY RETURN TO SCHOOL ABOUT SEVEN DAYS AFTER THE TONSILLECTOMY, BUT NO PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE) CLASSES OR RECESS UNTIL AFTER THE TWO WEEK FOLLOW UP VISIT.

5. YOU MAY SEE WHITE PATCHES IN YOUR CHILD’S THROAT. THIS IS A TEMPORARY NORMAL COVERING DURING THE HEALING PERIOD AND IS NOT A SIGN OF INFECTION. BAD BREATH AND NECK STIFFNESS MAY OCCUR FOLLOWING THIS PROCEDURE.

6. AFTER THE FIRST WEEK, THE CRUSTED COVERING CAN BE EXPECTED TO START COMING OFF, AND MAY CAUSE A LITTLE BLEEDING. THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT BUILD UP OF TOO MUCH CRUSTING OR BLEEDING, IS TO KEEP THE THROAT MOIST WITH LOTS OF FLUIDS, AND MAINTAIN GOOD NUTRITION.

7. OCCASIONAL TEMPERATURE, WHICH CAN BE EXPECTED, SHOULD BE TREATED WITH LIQUID TYLENOL AS DIRECTED. DO NOT TAKE PAIN MEDICINE AND TYLENOL AT THE SAME TIME. IF YOUR CHILD DEVELOPS FEVER OF 102 DEGREES OR MORE, OR HAS RED BLEEDING, WHICH LASTS MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES, PLEASE CALL OUR CLINIC.

8. REMEMBER, HIGH VOLUME NUTRITION AND HYDRATION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN AIDING THE HEALING PROCESS AFTER THIS SURGERY.
